Moehuri

A long time ago, on a clear starry night, there was a chief that bravely
sailed across the Pacific ocean from Hawaiki. The water was as calm
as a gentle  waterfall. Later that night, Moehuri saw land over the
horizon. Meanwhile, Moehuri started to chant a karakia. Before very
long, a shark - but no ordinary one, came and guided him safely into
the harbour.  Sometime later, Moehuri said ‘‘I will call this place
Mangonui because of this mighty shark. She is our kaitiaki.’’

Before very long, Moehuri and his many children were happily living
on Rangikapiti Pa. They could smell the fresh salty sea. They
cropped kumara and built huts to live in. All night, they heard the
waves crashing against the coast. Months later, Moehuri and his
children agreed to sink the waka, Ruakaramea.
