Rona And The Moon

A long, long time ago, there lived a family with a beautiful woman called Rona was playing around a kainga on the beach. Rona was beautiful. She had long, silky, black hair. Her eyes shone like the stars on a starry night. Rona had a husband and two little strong boys. Often Rona had a bad temper sometimes and her family got upset.

One day, Rona’s husband said ‘‘the moon looks right for fishing, so I’m going to take the boys fishing from the island across the bay. We will be back by tomorrow night.  When we get back, could you have dinner waiting for us?’’ So, Rona’s husband and the boys set off that evening. As soon as Rona noticed the gourds were empty, she started to skip happily to the spring. But, a cloud swept in front on light moon and everywhere around Rona was pitch black. Rona stubbed her toe and then tripped up. In her anger she yelled at the moon ‘‘BOIL YOUR HEAD!’’ The moon grabbed Rona and hauled her heavily into the night sky.

When her husband and the boys returned from fishing there was no Rona or hangi.  They looked up and saw their angry mother in the moon, frozen forever.
